So I called them and made a appointment for the following day to fix my computer issues, that I purposely infected, but they did not know that and still don’t know that.  All of the spyware viruses were common enough that anyone can get them at any time, I didn’t do anything off the wall.

So Geek Squad shows up at my place in their little voltswagon buggy, I gotta say I do love those cars.  The gentlemans name was Rick who had his name on his little nametag.  I showed him the computer and just sait it was getting popups, which it was, and I wanted him to fix it.

I didn’t have any anti virus software on the computer he said, which he was correct.  He then began selling me on a subscription to the very poor virus software called Norton Anti virus made by Symantec.  I of course know how bad this software is, because they spend all their money on advertising and not on R&D.  So I told him yes if that will remove all my viruses then yes I will pay for it.  I knew it would not.

I was right, he stayed there for an hour installing and running the virus scan and of course he and Norton could not remove the popups or locked files in the system32 folder.  Big surprise.  So I told him I can’t pay him if he can’t remove the viruses.  He then began saying how they have to take it back to the office at Best Buy and I might need to reinstall  Windows XP.  I laughed inside knowing that I did not have to and how foolish he looked.

I told him ok and that I might see another New Jersey Computer Repair company first.  He left, I downloaded AVG anti virus, the free program for home uses.  What do you know, it removed all the popups and spyware from the computer on its first run.

Do not call Geek Squad if you have comptuer repair issues in New Jersey.  They will just try to get your money by selling you their Norton Anti Virus that you do not need because the program is horrible.  Download AVG antivirus it will probably save the day for you.

I looked into it slightly and learned that AVG has an addon for Mozilla Firefox that provides real time notification if a website has history of harming it’s users in a bad way.  AVG Safe Search is part of AVG Antivirus Free edition.  You only need to OK the install and say whether you want to participate in the program that helps them update their database.

I choose to do that so that people in the future can learn from my mistakes and I am learning from theirs.  So once that was installed and setup with Firefox 3.0, a green check shows up on Google’s search engine when you search to show that if the website is safe or not.  I hate to do computer repair and this little addon makes me have to do less and less. And if you do go to a website that might be harmful to your computer, a page comes up telling you this and asking you are you sure you want to go there, very helpful.
